Although the Modi government reflects the "Make in India" strategy, Indian car manufacturing has already progressed to a significant level. The Indian Automotive industry now accounts for 22% of GDP and is one of the largest employment generators in the subcontinent! India is set to become the world's third largest automaker by 2020.To date, India is the world's largest three-wheeler market, the second largest motorcycle market, and the fourth largest tractor market in the world!
Mumbai, along with the Chakan Corridor near Pune, near Maharashtra, is a western cluster, with 33% market share. Audi, Volkswagen and Skoda are located in Aurangabad. Mahindra & Mahindra has an SUV and engine assembly plant in Nashik. General Motors, Tata Motors, Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, Jaguar, Fiat and Force Motors have assembly plants in the region.
The northern cluster is near the metropolitan area and accounts for 32%. Gurgaon and Manesar in Haryana are based on Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest automaker.
The emerging cluster is Gujarat, with manufacturing facilities at MG Motors, Atul Auto, Ford, Maruti Suzuki of Rajkot and the Peugeot-Citroen plant in Gujarat.
Kolkata is Hindustan Motors (defunct), Noida is Honda, Bengaluru is Toyota, Volvo and Scania, Andorra Isuzu and Kia are automobile manufacturing sectors across the country.

India currently has an annual production capacity of 17.5 million vehicles and we have production bases across the country for the whole range of vehicles. However, two hubs have grown to enormous size in the past 2 decades - Chennai Auto Hub (TN) and Pune Auto Hub (M'rashtra). Chennai Auto Hub is rightly touted as Detroit of Asia and is looking forward to becoming the largest automotive hub in the world. It houses Hyundai, Ford, Renault, Volvo, Mitsubishi, Nissan, BMW, Hindustan Motors, Daimler, Caparo, Mini & Datsun. With these many auto manufacturers on board, the Chennai automotive hub accounts for 35% of India's revenue and 60% of automotive exports
The Pune hub hosts car manufacturers such as Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, GM, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Mercedes Benz, JLR, Fiat & Force Motors: it contributes 33% of the market share. Third on the list is the NCR cluster - Maruti Suzuki is the big one. Gujarat is growing rapidly and already has Tata Motors (manufacturing the Nano), Ford, Maruti and Peugeot plants.
