Group PSA Launches Citron Brand in India and Making History for Over 100 Years
History of Citron
Citroen has been a part of the PSA Peugeot Citroen Group since 1976. The company was founded in 1919 by Andre-Gustave Citroën, a French industrialist. Over a short period, Citroën became known for its innovative technology thanks to the Traction Avant. This Citroën car was the first front-wheel-drive car in the world to be mass-produced. It also had the distinction of being the first to have a unitary body type and no chassis to support mechanical components.
In 1954, Citroën produced the hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension system, which was first in the world and then in 1955, the French automobile company launched the DS, the first car model with disc brakes. Citroen introduced swiveling headlights in 1967 to improve visibility while driving on winding roads. These innovations have won Citroen's many international and national awards. In fact, Citroën has won the European Car of the Year award three times.
However, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Citroën began to face cash flow problems and ownership issues. This prompted Citroën to join forces with Peugeot. In 1974, Peugeot acquired a 38.2% stake in the company and two years later in 1976, it became a majority stakeholder. This led to the formation of the PSA Peugeot Citroen Group.

The PSA Group (PSA Peugeot Citroën) is all set to make its debut in India in 2020. And as it is launching, the carmaker has already started opening shops in the country. A Citroën showroom has come up along the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway in Ahmedabad.
The PSA Group will make its debut in India with the C5 Aircross, which is expected to go on sale around mid-2020. It is a mid-size SUV that, when launched in India, will like the Hyundai Tucson and VW Tiguan.
Although PSA has not revealed much about the India-spec C5 Aircross, we expect the SUV to be offered with both petrol and diesel engines. While the petrol SUV is likely to make a 1.6-liter turbo unit 180PS / 250Nm, the diesel engine on offer should be a 2.0-liter unit, outpacing 176PS / 400Nm. Globally, both these engines are mated to an 8-speed auto, but the Citroen can also offer a manual gearbox in an India-specific car.
The Citroen C5 Aircross is expected to be the first Citroen model to arrive in the Indian market. While Citroen has not confirmed this, the C5 Aircross is expected to cost INR 25 lakh.
